Little Theatre Cinema wedding

Little Theatre Cinema reportage wedding photography

A very early start, on a Monday morning, to get from Sussex to Bath – for a small wedding at the Little Theatre cinema in the centre of the city. A small 1930s, two-screen cinema. This was just a few hours coverage – prep, ceremony, drinks, speeches – for Rachel and Ashley’s intimate wedding day. Why a wedding photographer all the way from Sussex? They had seen my work a couple of years ago, at the wedding of their close friends, Lillian and Ian. A wedding at Buxted Park in East Sussex. Nice to see them again, with their daughter.

I arrived in Bath in very heavy rain. It brightened up but then soaked me again, as I searched for the apartment in which Rachel was getting ready. Hair, makeup, dress on – as the rain fell outside. But just as we were about to walk to the venue (I had already had a quick look and had bumped into Ashley, delivering stuff there), then the sun came out again. For the short walk, through the tourists, to the Little Theatre cinema – just near the Roman baths in Bath.

Wedding in a cinema

I’ve shot in cinemas before. Once in Worthing and also in Islington. For venues that are known for being dark, they have their challenges. But actually can be more interesting light than many regular venues. Here I was allowed on the stage, during the ceremony, shooting into the stage lights – it gives the images a more dramatic effect I think. In keeping with the atmosphere of the venue. Why would you use flash or set up a light here? (Whenever you are due to shoot a new venue, a quick look up via google, to see how others have shot there, is useful. I’ve seen a lot of flash used here…I don’t carry one).

A nice touch, as the bride and groom walked out – confetti thrown from the balcony above. It was then drinks outside the cinema. A brief time back inside, as some rain fell. Before the guests headed off to the restaurant.

We held back for a few quick pictures, in the area, then I followed Rachel and Ashley over to the The Ivy. Speeches before the meal and my coverage was done. Time to head home, back to Sussex – it took me almost an hour to get out of Bath (one very bad traffic junction…)
