Worthing Dome wedding | Ali & Chris

Worthing Dome

Worthing Dome – a local landmark opposite the Pier. One of England’s oldest working cinemas, a Grade II listed Edwardian cinema, built in 1911. Originally called The Kursaal – German for ‘Cure Hall’ – it housed a health centre and entertainment complex, including the electric cinema. The German-sounding name was dropped during WWI, being renamed The Dome after the three-storey tower that gives it such a distinctive look and where the wedding ceremony was held, on the top floor.

I last shot here in 2012, on New Year’s Eve, as some very hostile weather raged outside. That time the ceremony was in the actual cinema with the top floor used for guests to change into fancy dress for the evening party. There had been a plan to do a shot of everyone sitting in the cinema seats at this wedding, but with the latest James Bond film being shown and with covid restrictions, it wasn’t possible. This wedding took place above the cinema.

Coverage began just down the seafront from the Worthing Dome, at the Premier Inn hotel. Not the easiest rooms to get pictures in, the large beds, the downlighters from the ceiling, etc. But here Ali was getting ready, a Brighton FC scarf hanging along with the wedding dress.

Brighton Football Club led to a wedding at The Worthing Dome

Brighton Football Club is how Ali and Chris met. So it was appropriate that Ali and her father should arrive at the wedding ceremony wearing Brighton Football tracksuits tops – it got the intended laugh. The ceremony was at the top of the Dome, not a big space, there is a big hole in the floor down to the Whispering Gallery below, but you can’t complain about the light. The cloudy skies outside gave a nice clean light, on a very sunny day it could be interesting!?

Drinks in the gallery below, as more guests arrived after the ceremony – numbers are limited in the ceremony room. Then downstairs to the Main Lounge for the meal. This is a good-sized room, with a large terrace at the front, overlooking the seafront and with views down the Sussex coast towards Brighton and the Seven Sisters beyond. Being early October it was still warm enough to be out on this terrace late into the evening.

Here are a few images from this relaxed Worthing Dome wedding…
