Cambridge University wedding | Naomi & Jon

Bride walks towards the Mathematical Bridge in Cambridge

Cambridge University wedding

Cambridge University wedding at Queens’ College for Naomi and Jon, on a July day of very mixed weather, plus the day of a crucial Quarter-Final in the Euros for England! When would the wedding guests break and steal a watch of the game on their phones?

Queens’ College, Cambridge

Naomi and Jon came down to Cambridge from their home in the Scottish borders, as this was Jon’s old college. Guests had come from all over, so it was seen as ideal not only as a unique and historic venue but geographically too. The last time I shot here, it was a ceremony in the Chapel but the wedding reception at that time took place at St John’s College, after a trip in Punts. (I still have yet to shoot at my wife’s old college, Jesus).

Coverage began in a lovely little rental on Milton Road. Having parked up at the college – I love town venues with parking! I took an Uber to where Naomi was getting ready with family and friends. At this point in the day, it was wet. The ceremony in the chapel, a bit different this time as the Chaplain told me about a door near the altar that I could use after photographing Naomi walk in with her father, heading out to the side and I could then walk round to shoot the rest of the ceremony from the back. Very useful.

After the ceremony and the weather looking not that great, the drinks reception was in the Old Kitchens. An interesting room but to be honest, with the number of people, not great for photography. No room to move around. Fingers crossed the sun came out people moved outside. Luckily it did and everyone moved into Old Court. The wedding games could be laid out on the lawns. Dinner was to be in the nearby Old Hall. But once the guests had made their way in, Jon had a surprise for Naomi, a song. His brother would make him do this again during the speeches.

Confetti on the Mathematical Bridge

Could this famous wooden footbridge hold that many people? It did but their son wasn’t too impressed with being carried through a confetti run… Everyone then moved onto the College Bar. By now the football was getting interesting. The game was going to penalties. Guests started watching on their phones, “Don’t tell the groom!” they said as I photographed them. Game won, time for the first dance…
