Wedding vow renewal | Ashley & Eric

Wedding vow renewal ceremony and party

After fifteen years of marriage, Ashley and Eric, wanted to renew their wedding vows and celebrate with family and friends. They also wanted this captured ‘naturally’ with reportage imagery, rather than endless setup group shots. This was a ‘word of mouth’ booking for me. Ashley and I, have a mutual work colleague, Richard. From my days at The Times and Ashley’s at the Press Association. She got in touch with me, about photographing this day, back in August 2017. At that point, the date for the ceremony/party had not been set but she wanted to talk about the wedding photography style. A few months later the date was set, they booked.

Early April, 2019. Just days before there had been a brief ‘summer’, when it wasn’t just builders and postmen wearing shorts. But then the British Weather remembered it was still Spring and the temperature dropped, with a chilly wind thrown in for effect. It didn’t kill the party…

Coverage starts at their home (built by Eric’s great grandfather) in Surrey. Getting ready. Then down the steep slope to the waiting red Routemaster bus and on to the church. St Peter’s, in nearby Limpsfield. During the wedding vow renewal ceremony, Ashley had a surprise for Eric, a heartfelt speech, about all they had been through in recent years and to thank him for his support. Bit of moisture in his eye?

Back out of the church, and as the guests lined up outside the main door, Ashley and Eric popped around the back, to lay flowers on a family grave. Confetti blizzard and onto the bus. Glasses of fizz and a bus trip down the A25 to Sevenoaks and back. A bit of rain in the air now…Back then to Oxted and their favourite restaurant, Cucina – for some very good food and friendly service. A walk back to the house, in fact to a neighbour’s house, with decking overlooking the valley. Perfect spot for some drinks but…the weather. It was bitter. The party either congregated around an open fire in the garden, or headed inside. to warm up. After drinks there, back down to their own home…for more drinks and snacks. Plus a first dance in the open, in their garden. As the light faded, the party continued with blankets, to keep out the chill. The weather wasn’t going to win!

Here are few images from the day…
