Suffolk wedding

Suffolk wedding photography

It was a Suffolk wedding last Saturday – Charlotte and Sean’s intimate wedding in Bawdsey. Childhood sweethearts, Sean was marrying his former deputy headteacher’s daughter!

My journey up from Sussex had seen almost two hours of torrential rain, but the coastal micro-climate in Suffolk meant lots of sunshine with fast, scurrying clouds and a lot of wind! That wind would feature throughout the day – the wind loves bridal veils! It also loves it when a bride tries to stand on a shingle beach for pictures too…. 🙂

The day began on board two very old vintage buses, there to take the groom and guests from Bawdsey up to the isolated but beautiful church in Ramsholt. This very unique looking church overlooks the estuary of the River Deben, with the cranes at Felixstowe in the far distance. The rounded tower is built of Septaria (light to medium- brown limestone of coarse texture which outcrops in this area), flint and medieval brick and probably dates to the late thirteenth century. Like in many parts of the country, it probably replaced an earlier Saxon church. The population of the parish, which it serves, is now one of the smallest in Suffolk. It is home to juts around 32 people. The church is surrounded by an overgrown graveyard, as a wildlife sanctuary. Indeed the bride was greeted by a mouse sat in the lee of the church’s porch. He scarpered during the last hymn.

The buses  – Florence and Ermintrude – then took everyone back to Bawdsey, to a reception on the front lawn of Charlotte’s parents’ house. Here Charlotte was greeted by her old bicycle in the driveway bedecked with flowers and the party began. To shoot the bride and groom portraits we drove down the road to the grounds of an old MOD facility and a brief attempt on the beach, in the wind – Charlotte didn’t stop smiling throughout, despite her dress suffering ( but then the plan is to turn it into cushions? ). I also wonder what the ghost made of it? But that’s another story…we were not alone at that house. (?)
