Horsted Place – Hannah & Andy

Horsted Place

Horsted Place wedding photography

Saturday turned out to be warmer than forecast, which is handy when you have an outdoor wedding ceremony planned. Hannah and Andy chose the Victorian country house hotel, Horsted Place, near Uckfield in East Sussex, as the venue for their wedding day. They took over the entire hotel, with close family and friends, and the weather played along. A sunny August bank holiday weekend day…

So coverage begins in The Neville Suite, as Hannah got ready with her bridesmaids and her young son, Thomas. A very camera-aware Thomas! Downstairs, Andy was maybe regretting the suits, with waistcoats, that he, the ushers and his father were wearing, given the heat. Did it feel hotter because August this year has been so cool? With the ceremony at 1.30, the sun was not letting up. Hat off to the musician, Laura, who sat playing before the ceremony and throughout the drinks reception, in the hot sunshine – the venue could have got her a parasol? But back to that ceremony…

This was only my second time photographing a wedding at Horsted Place – the other time being back in 2002! How things have changed in wedding photography. Then shooting on Nikon D1X cameras, this time on the new, silent, Sony A9 cameras. Digital photography in its awkward infancy to digital photography showing what the future is. What hadn’t changed, were some ideas…I declined the offer, from the venue, of posing the bride on the stairs, by the window, as she came down, for a picture…that’s a bit old fashioned and not reportage wedding photography. What is reportage, is catching a tearful groom in the garden, as he saw his bride walk towards him. The ceremony done, the confetti run back down the aisle…time for drinks and games on the lawn. Still in the sunshine.

A quick portrait amongst the trees and then time for everyone to head in for the meal – just as the clouds arrived. Speeches followed, with Andy leaping out of his chair to offer support to his father-in-law, during his emotional speech. The best man delivered with his – although with the use of his daughter’s karaoke microphone, was it going to be a song? A gift for the groom of two small boxes… A computer quiz to finish off. Cut the cake – made by one of their friends, before the evening dancing.

Here are a few images from this summer wedding day at Horsted Place…
