Now this was a cracking wedding! This was a local wedding, in Southborough, Kent. It happened last Thursday, but if it had been only a few days before, I could have paraphrased Thomas Hardy and called this post, “The (wedding of the) Mayor of Southborough” – as the groom, Nick, was just that.
When I say local, I mean that was how the couple planned it. Their small but very chic cottage, where Diana got ready, is (literally) a stone’s throw from the church, St Thomas’s, where the ceremony would take place. For once that phrase is not just estate agent hyperbole. The first part of the reception was a stone’s throw in the other direction, in their local pub, The Imperial on the London Road.
Nick is a local, Diana is from Australia. Nick is also Diana’s boss – they are art teachers. How did they meet? When Diana came to a job interview at the school and Nick was one of the interviewers. I am assured it was all above board but an informant told me that Diana blushed deeper and deeper as the interview went on. She got the job, she also got her man. Nick also got his girl, a girl he had once watched cycling to work and declared would be his wife.
So, coverage begins in the terraced cottage. Here one of the most elegant brides you could meet got ready with family and friends, all over from Australia for the big day. A short stroll then across the road, the neighbours peering through their window and then rather a long wait in the church porch for Diana and her father, before the ceremony began.
Married! It was then a case of hugs, handshakes and confetti before another stroll past their home and into the pub on the corner of the road (A note here, the pub were very helpful, letting me shoot barside – makes a big difference when shooting a reception in a pub – not all let you.)
We squeezed in some portraits amongst a line of trees on the side of the A26! Then some more, just past the church and on the spot where Nick had proposed to Diana. It was then off to the second half of the wedding reception, at nearby Salomons Estate. More drinks before the meal and speeches. But before the speeches, cake…..birthday cake for Nick’s father. A lovely, relaxed wedding.
