Bartholomew Barn sits deep in the West Sussex countryside, near the market town of Petworth that rises over the rolling landscape. It was here that Michele and James held their wedding last week, a year after getting married.
Michelle and James live and work in Dubai so they had done the legal bit in a registry office before relocating there. But as James put it, it was just signing a piece of paper and they thought of it no more. Last week was the real wedding. A chance for them to fly back to the UK and create a wedding day to share with family and friends. A wedding day they could design themselves and for Michelle that meant getting married barefoot! ( James kept his shoes on). They also got married on the hottest day in weeks – a last swansong for the summer in September? Not Dubai standard, but still hot.
Michelle got ready with her mother and bridesmaids a few miles away at the luxurious B&B, High Hampstead. When I left there, Michelle had makeup done, hair done and dress on. Arriving at the wedding venue, James was still in a t-shirt and jeans, helping set up for the ceremony. As family and friends gathered, so the clouds broke up and the air temperature started to rise. For Michelle it was going to be a very hot drive in her friend’s bedecked VW beetle. It would take a few moments of being cooled down before the short walk across the lawn to the marquee where Reverend Rob waited to start the ceremony. Childhood sweethearts, James and Michelle met working in a bovine named pub when in their teens, hence all the cow references around. Here was the chance to cement their partnership in front of those that mattered to them.
After the ceremony in the marquee (first time I’ve shot an ‘outdoor’ wedding at Bartholomew barn and it works well) and drinks on the lawn it was into the actual Bartholomew Barn for the wedding breakfast, followed by the speeches. As the sun dipped ( getting quicker at this time of year it seems ) there was a chance for some pictures in the surrounding fields. ( The midges loved Michelle’s hairspray! )
Then it was time to party! A lovely day for a great couple!
Here are a few images from the day…
